Methods of NHS Dental Sedation
Because dentists know that all the thought of injections and drilling can cause anxiety in some patients, there are several methods of sedation to make it a little less stressful.
Inhalation sedation - Nitrous oxide, affectionately known as laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation available. A specially designed mask is put over your nose which will be used before and during your treatment. Because the gas is so harmless, it can even be used for children.
Oral sedation - This method involves the patient being given a sedative pill before the appointment, so they arrive much more relaxed. This is a stronger sedative than laughing gas, and takes longer to wear off, so the patient will be advised against to driving home.
IV sedation – While this method is available, it is not commonly used as there are less invasive ways to sedate the patient adequately.
